Is coeliac disease the same as an allergy to wheat?

Coeliac disease is not the same as an allergy to wheat. Coeliac disease is a well defined, serious illness where the body's immune system attacks itself when gluten is eaten. This causes damage to the lining of the gut and means that the body cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Coeliac disease is not a food allergy or intolerance, it is an autoimmune disease. Wheat allergy is a reaction to proteins found in wheat, triggered by the immune system and usually occurs within seconds or minutes of eating.

How common is coeliac disease?

It is thought that one in 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease but only 24% of these people are diagnosed. We estimate there are nearly half a million people who have coeliac disease but aren't yet diagnosed.

Is there a cure for coeliac disease?

At the moment there is no cure and the treatment is a life long gluten-free diet. There is, however, research underway to develop a vaccine.

What are the symptoms of coeliac disease?

The symptoms of coeliac disease vary from person to person and can range from very mild to severe. Common symptoms include: diarrhoea excessive wind constipation nausea and vomiting stomach pain anaemia tiredness headaches weight loss (but not in all cases) mouth ulcers.

If I have coeliac disease, are my children more likely to also have it?

Coeliac disease does run in families but not in a predictable way. Around one in ten close relatives of people with coeliac disease (for example, father, mother, son, daughter) will be at risk of coeliac disease, so if you have a relation with coeliac disease you should be aware of the symptoms.

What happens if someone with coeliac disease eats gluten by mistake?

The effect of eating gluten varies from person to person and may last from a few hours to a few days. Symptoms of eating gluten, or being 'glutened', include headaches, diarrhoea, stomach pains and lethargy. The reaction is not the same as an allergic reaction and does not cause anaphylactic shock.

Is there any advice for people with coeliac disease who are pregnant?

Pregnancy holds no greater risks for women diagnosed with coeliac disease than those without, but it is important you follow a strict gluten-free diet and make sure you get a good intake of calcium and iron.

Can only children get coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease can develop and be diagnosed at any age. It may develop after weaning onto cereals that contain gluten, in old age or any time in between. Coeliac disease is most frequently diagnosed in people aged 40-60 years old. Delayed diagnosis is common, Coeliac UK research shows the average time it takes to be diagnosed is 13 years.

Can you grow out of coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is a lifelong condition and the gluten-free diet is the only treatment for it. If gluten is introduced back into the diet at a later date, the immune system will react and the gut lining will become damaged again.

Surely a breadcrumb wouldn't hurt someone with coeliac disease?

Even very small amounts of gluten can be damaging to people with coeliac disease. Therefore, taking sensible steps to avoid cross contamination with gluten is important.

If a product is out of stock, when will it be back in and available to order?

We are constantly replenishing our stock so if a product is not available, this should not be the case for too long. As a registered user, you can click on the ""notify me when back in stock"" link which appears next to an out of stock product, to receive an email when it becomes available again.

I have a specific food allergy. How do I know which Coori products are suitable for me?

When you enter our Coori shop, you'll see our specially-developed search function at the top of the page; this will allow you to easily filter our full range of foods based on exactly what you want to exclude (or include). A full ingredient list is also displayed on each individual product webpage, so if you're tempted by one of our Coori products, simply click on its image to find out more about what it contains.

How do you ensure that Coori products don't contain anything that could be harmful to me?

At Coori allergen safety starts at the very beginning: we develop our recipes to be naturally free of allergens whenever possible. We select our suppliers with great care, and only use ingredients that have been processed on nut-, dairy- and gluten-free production lines. We handle all our ingredients according to strict rules to prevent cross-contamination, and we use controlled manufacturing processes and cleaning validation systems to ensure our recipes only contain exactly what we declare on the pack. Each of our products has its own webpage in the Coori shop with a full list of ingredients, so you can check to see exactly what it contains. If it's not on the list, it's not in the package! The gluten free bread recipe uses milk, but I cannot drink cows milk. Is there an alternative?

You can substitute cows milk with goat, sheep, soya, rice, almond or oat milk.

The gluten free bread recipe uses vinegar, can I use any type of vinegar?

Any type of vinegar can be used, including cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, rice vinegar etc. However, beware of malt vinegar as this is made from barley, which contains gluten.

My gluten free pastry is crumbly and very hard when baked, what advice can you give me?

Gluten free flours need more liquid than conventional flours, so add liquid until the dough is slightly sticky, then rest it for 15-30 minutes. The dough will absorb the rest of the liquid. If necessary, roll out the pastry between two sheets of cling film.

What should I do if I am not happy with one of your products that I have purchased?

We hope that our products have reached you in perfect condition; if not, please let us know! Simply return the pack and contents to our address below, explaining when and where they were purchased, and a brief description of what you think is wrong.

My order has arrived, but it is incorrect.

The best thing to do is email us as soon as possible on customerservice@coori.co.uk and explain, with your order number, the issue.

Where do your products come from?

We search the world for the best tasting gluten free products. For us it's about discovering the very best and getting it onto our site. We've already sourced pasta from Italy, bread from the US, soy sauce from Japan liquorice from Australia, biscuits from the UK. And that's just the start. How many different gluten free products do you stock?

As well as creating our own products, our team have tried literally thousands different gluten free products in categories from pasta to cereals, ready meals to breads and snacks to soy sauces. Of these we sell just over 100 of the very best. We're constantly looking for new products and recipes, so do send us any recommendations you might have to team@coori.co.uk

How long will a product keep for?

This depends on the category and the product. On the website we put the manufacturers recommended shelf life and we encourage you to pay careful attention to this information.

Why do you want me to rate and review products?

Our aim is to stock only the very tastiest and best performing gluten free products. We test everything before we stock it as one of our products, but we'd love to know what you think of the products we select. If a product consistently receives a poor rating, that's the end of it.

How quickly can I get my order?

For UK deliveries 24 hours after your order we'll despatch for delivery the next working day via courier . The courier will contact you by email and / or SMS to confirm delivery slot Ð and if that doesn't suit, you can rearrange delivery.

Can I arrange for a post dated delivery (i.e. a delivery not the next day)?

Yes as long as you provide us with full details

Can I have a weekend delivery? And how much more will this cost?

we do not currently offer Sunday deliveries, but Saturdays are always available and at no extra cost.

I don't live in the UK but want to buy some of the products you retail

Can I cancel or amend an order after I've confirmed it?

Unfortunately we can't accept any amendments or any cancellations for any orders once you've placed and confirmed your order.

Where are the products manifactured ?

Our products come from all around the world, the majority are currently sourced in the Uk with some traditional lines coming from Italy.

Do production sites conform to EU regulations, and are they regularly audited?

Our product development manager visits all partner sites on a regular basis and we work very closlye with Coeliac Uk in order to be aware of new EU regulations which are applied in all of our production sites

What do I do if the order does not turn up in perfect conditions?

All our recipes are tested in a kitchen where oven temperatures are monitored, please check that all of your equipment is in good working order and hits the temperature required
